Director Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, due out in June, marks the director’s return to sci-fi origins of Blade Runner and Alien. The little we know from the teaser trailer that was released a few months back, man goes into space in search of the of mankind’s origins. Prometheus is a prequel of sorts to Alien, and with a new viral trailer, the link between the two is recognized.
In Alien, a company called Weyland-Yutani sent the Nostromo ship into space. In Prometheus, Guy Pearce plays a well-dressed, über posh, genius, self-aggrandizing cosmopolitan visionary named Peter Weyland. The trailer is being published as a talk from TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) talk from the year 2023. The trailer is even published on TED’s site. The talk description reads:
Peter Weyland has been a magnet for controversy since he announced his intent to build the first convincingly humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade.
Whether challenging the ethical boundaries of medicine with nanotechnology or going toe to toe with the Vatican itself on the issue of gene-therapy sterilization, Sir Peter prides himself on his motto, “If we can, we must.” After a three year media blackout, Weyland has finally emerged to reveal where he’s heading next. Wherever that may be, we will most certainly want to follow.
In less than a decade, Weyland Corporation became a worldwide leader in emerging technologies and launched the first privatized industrial mission to leave the planet Earth. “There are other worlds than this one,” Sir Peter boldly declared, “And if there is no air to breathe, we will simply have to make it.
At the least, the teaser is a great introduction to the story of Prometheus, the titan who stole fire from the gods. The short was directed by Ridley Scott’s sun, Luke Scott, and written by Prometheus writer Damon Lindelof.
