Taxis for Tweets: Nissan’s Ambitious Advertising Ploy


Japanese car manufacturer Nissan took London commuters by storm with an ambitious new social media marketing strategy to promote their electric vehicles. This campaign was designed to draw awareness to how much cheaper transportation could be with environmentally friendly technologies. According to Nissan, a taxi ride in one of their “Leaf Taxis” is on average six times less expensive than the equivalent ride on your common gas-guzzling cab.

To promote their eco-friendly taxis, Nissan offered free cab rides to those who would care to tweet about it. When Londoners tweeted their location and destination with the hashtag #6xCheaper, Nissan would respond via twitter and send a Leaf Taxi their way for a free ride to wherever they wanted to go. The campaign brought Nissan favorable publicity and gave them a chance to test their new electric taxis in a downtown environment. And a number of lucky London travelers got to shave dollars off their daily expenses – all for a tweet.
