Watch: New Trailer to PT Anderson’s The Master

Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming film The Master continues its mysterious yet viral campaign. The last trailer showcased Joaquin Phoenix’s troubled character, while this one introduces Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s and Amy Adam’s roles.

Seymour Hoffman plays the role of the titular Master, Lancaster Dodd, the man who will provide guidance to Phoenix’s sailor. We already know that Dodd will be a war veteran and founder of a religious organization called “The Cause.” In this trailer, “Hopelessly Inquisitive,” Dodd describes himself as such, along with “a writer, doctor, a nuclear physicist, and a theoretical philosopher.” Does this solidify the much-rumored parallels to Scientology-founder L. Ron Hubbard? It seems so.

We also see a bit of Amy Adam’s in 50s, possibly 40s garb, and Joaquin Phoenix in a jail cell.

The trailer is brilliantly done, set against a Jonny Greenwood score that sounds all-too-familiar. The Master will find a limited release in October and should be in wide release by the end of 2012.

Thonis, the legendary port city that served as an entryway to the Egyptian empire, was long considered to be a myth. The tales of its immense power and vast riches conflicted with the evidence of its existence—mainly that there was none. Cities of such grandeur do not typically disappear off the face of the earth. Though he makes time for public grandstanding by claiming a US President “doesn’t care about black people” or interrupting the VMAs, he remains mostly quiet when it [...]
