Not much is known about The Master, famed director Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film, and most of what is known has centered around Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character and his relation to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
The parallels between Hoffman’s character and Hubbard—at least as detailed in an early screenplay—are undeniable. As Michael Cieply reported in The New York Times, the Dodd character was clearly born around the time as Hubbard, and share’s the latter’s “love of boats” as well as his “near-paranoid suspicion of the American Medical Association.” While “Hubbard’s followers hope to become ‘clear,’” Dodd’s “work toward ‘optimum.’”
Today’s teaser trailer answers approximately none of those questions, instead focusing on Joaquin Phoenix’s boozed naval officer.
The parallels in composition and style to Anderson’s last film, the award-winning There Will Be Blood, are evident. Both movies look to have unsociable, drunk leads set against Jonny Greenwood-like rattlings. Watch below for the initial teaser for There Will Be Blood (sans the aforementioned rattlings).
