About On Air

On Air is a new home for culture, creativity, and thought. The team at The Airspace has spent close to a year publishing stories online while pushing the definition of what digital publishing should be. We’ve worked with writers, artists, and musicians to make TheAirspace.net and Airspace Records places people can rely on for quality work but we decided to take things one step further. The team at The Airspace wanted to make the most simple and elegant digital publication possible. On Air is the result of our efforts and what we believe is the next step in making the world a better and more intelligent place.

Every two weeks, a new edition of On Air will be published containing at least four pieces of completely original high-quality journalism, essay, or fiction. Our articles center in topics on culture, technology, and scholarship and are written by college and university students around America who are burgeoning professionals in the areas they write in.

On Air is simple. For $2.00 a month, the newest issue of On Air is delivered to your email inbox every two weeks. You can read it in your email, or on the web. It looks great on a computer, tablet, smartphone, and on paper. No advertisements or gimmicks. Just great writing from students across the country. Subscribe to On Air, it only takes a minute.

We understand you might have questions, so we put together the most common ones to help you understand what On Air is all about.


What is this, really?

On Air by The Airspace is a digital periodical. Don’t call it a magazine because that evokes glossy and portable stacks of paper. At The Airspace, we spend a considerable amount of time looking for ways old models of information transfer can be brought to the web, and as a consequence to the entire world. On Air is a step back from the unrelenting 24-hours news cycle. It’s a inroad to thoughtful writing on topics that matter.

Wait. Wait. Wait! You’re now charging for these “thought-provoking articles” which I used to be able to get for free on TheAirspace.net.

This is true. Over the last 10 months, The Airspace has published over nearly 300,000 words (that’s more than the longest Harry Potter book) of exceptional content. Many of the feature pieces we have published belong in the text of On Air. But On Air didn’t exist back then so we put them where they would have the most singificant impact on the greatest number of people. By seperating On Air and The Airspace, we can play to each strengths. The quick commentary on breaking news, events, and discoveries will still be published on The Airspace while in-depth essays, profiles, and thought-proviking articles that demand a bit more time will be published through On Air.

But it’s not a greedy money grab. There’s a bit more to it than that. On The Airspace we sell advertising space in order to cover the cost of producing the articles, maintaining the site, and ensuring the highest possible quality. With On Air, we want to go above and beyond the work that appeared on The Airspace. This means our stories require more resources to put together and unfortunately great writing and thinking has some unshakeable expenses. We work as hard as we can to keep our costs down but the quality you deserve isn’t cheap. By charging $2.00 a month (that’s $1 per issue) we can make a premium product. And we believe premium writing that’s less than a latte is worth making.

But the Internet is really big, there’s a lot of information out there, I’ll just stick to what’s free, thank you very much.

We understand how that’s attractive. There is a lot of great information on the Internet and when it comes to news, it’s not too difficult to find out the “who,” “what,” “when,” and “where” of each story. What isn’t available as regularly is the “how,” “why,” and “what it means.” On Air seeks the answers to those questions. We’re not just another blog. Any one can list facts but that’s not our goal. Our writers give personality to the pieces they write and make sure to share the stories that matter. We do this, because we believe in what we are doing. But if you’re just looking for the “who,” “what,” “when,” and “where,” we will still be publishing daily on TheAirspace.net.

Okay, I’m convinced it might be worth shelling out two bucks a month for, but email distribution? Come on this isn’t the 80s.

The great thing about email is that it’s not going anywhere, it’s dead-simple, and insanely reliable. We didn’t want to get ahead of ourselves with On Air so we’re dedicating most of our budget to making the best content possible. With email, On Air will always show up on time, you don’t have to go searching for your issue, there are no complicated processes to get your copy, you’ll be able to have an archive of all issues, and once it’s been delivered you can do whatever you like with it. On Air is formatted for viewing on your computer, tablet, or mobile device. We also want to make sure anyone who wants access to On Air can get it. Making an app right away would have meant only catering to smaller group of people. Additionally, all issues will be available to view on the web.

But, what about apps?

Apps are a hot item right now. We have plans for expanding On Air into a mobile App as well as a web app. But our development team is very small (one person). If On Air reaches a certain level of popularity, we will be able to dedicate resources to making these plans a reality. But until then, we want to keep the costs for you as low as possible and focus on kick-ass articles.
